Introduction
Seeking perfection can easily become a roadblock to progress, and I'm here to share a little insight with a touch of humor. Picture me, writing this blog after a mere 5/8-minute workout - not exactly the epitome of perfection, right?
But hey, as Simon Sinek wisely said,
"When you work out, and you look in the mirror, you will see nothing, then you work out again look in the mirror and you see nothing so clearly it's not working it can't be measured therefore it cannot be there. However, if you do these actions frequently and often enough you'll eventually see change and after months and years of training, you will have transformed your body."
Why so short?
Now, I know five or eight minutes might not seem like the optimal workout, but there's more to it than meets the eye. You see, even a short workout helps reinforce the importance of your training in your mind. It allows you to chip away at your goals, balancing a mix of pushing hard and taking it easy. It's like driving on a curvy road - you know when to break around the corners to avoid falling off the edge, but when you hit a straight stretch, you can open up and accelerate towards your destination.
So, seeking perfection often becomes a barrier to progress. We convince ourselves that everything must align perfectly for our routines to be effective. But what if we could do what we can when we can and gradually do better when the opportunity arises?
The solution
Life throws obstacles at us, both physical and mental, but it's the mental ones that are trickier to overcome.
One of these obstacles is the belief that we must have the perfect conditions to train. You know, "I'll workout when I'm less tired, less fatigued." But really, how much energy do you really need? Why not approach your workout with the energy you have in the moment and build from there?
Instead of focusing on the big picture, think about the immediate task.
Picture this: Focus on changing into your gym clothes; self-check-in - that's it! Move on to the next task: Put on your trainers; self-check-in. Take it one step at a time, and you'll find that each activity only requires a small amount of energy. Soon enough, you'll be sitting in the car, driving to the gym, and before you know it, you'll be trying out exercises at your own pace. It's like having a series of easy habits that build upon each other, requiring just a 5-10% motivation boost each time.
Admit it, you haven't earned the right to do more yet, just like you wouldn't jump into the deep end if you haven't learned to swim. Embrace the simplicity of small tasks.
Conclusion
So, let's get rid of the notion that perfection is the key to success. Instead, let's focus on progress, step by step, in the gym. No matter what level you're at right now, this approach can help you make efforts to consistently show up and workout like a "pro."
And hey, let's save the discussion about why we always say we'll start on Monday for another time, shall we?
